Gimme back my bullets

I needed more .38 shells so my husband took me out to the club to see if we could get more. Since it was cold AND the day before Christmas Eve, no one was out kerplunking. We found buckets of shells but very few .38's. I use the .38's to make my Pray for our Troops necklaces. I listed several shells in my Attic Rat Etsy shop since I won't live long enough to use all the shells I hauled home

Texas Renaissance Festival

I did not want a big party for my 50th. I just want it to quietly go by. No fanfare, no ticker tape parade. Just let it slip on by. Instead of a party, I thought it would be fun to go to the Texas Ren Faire. The weather was perfect. We've been there when it was pouring down rain. I will not go in the rain, ever again.

There are people who are paid to be part of the festivities. This one wore a really nice costume.

There is a huge parade that is lots of fun to watch.

Must keep things tidy. LOL

These really tall costumes are my favorite. They would be tricky to walk around in. I would fall flat on my face if I were to try it. If I hadn't hurt my toe, I would have dressed up as a fairy. It is so much fun to go dressed up.

Rivet Gun 101

I picked up some cute one-gallon cans at Warrenton last week so that I could convert them into some sweet birdhouses. In the past, I connected the tin using screws. Today, my husband was home so I grabbed a quick lesson on the use of a rivet gun. OMG! They are so, so simple to use. I had absolutely no idea.

This is what I accomplished after only 1 lesson!

Our rivet gun belongs in a museum, but it still functions like it did when it was new.

To use the gun, simply drill an 1/8 inch hole in the pieces you wish to connect. Load an 1/8 inch rivet in the gun like the picture above. Stick the little peg in the hole you drilled, making sure that it rests snug against your project. Squeeze the handle several times until it "pops". Since they are aluminum, you could have the grip of an 80-year old and still manage it.

I am off to see what else I can rivet . . .

Old window re-do

I've already sold a few Paris windows so I thought it would be fun to change it up a bit. Since this window had a little green paint on it, I decided that would make a wonderful garden themed window. I just love the late 19th century graphics. For the background, I used pages from an old book that I picked up at the recycling center. I know that I'm ~~cheap~~ resourceful. I admit it.

S and H Green Stamps

Remember S and H green stamps? I do! Each time you bought groceries, the clerk would hand you stamps equivalent to what you bought. There were blank stamp books available. Once you filled up all the pages, they could be redeemed for cool stuff at one of their redeption centers. I remember riding into Oklahoma City with my mom, sister, aunt and cousins to visit the S and; H green stamp redemption store. It was lots of fun.

After I got married, I went to our grocery store and they offered Texas Gold stamps. I would LOVE to make a necklace with some of those stamps. I just haven't come across any. They stopped issuing them sometime in the 80's.

Scary Paris traffic

Lucky, lucky me! While in Germany, my husband insisted that we go to Paris.

I had heard horror stories about the Paris traffic and wasn't so sure that I wanted to endure it just to see Paris. As far as I was concerned, there were many, many wonderful spots in Germany that we hadn't yet explored. I had also heard that people were so rude there. (We didn't experience any rudeness. Everyone that we encountered was very gracious and polite.)

Each time Howard would talk about us going, I would say that we didn't have to go. He never heard me say that.

Between all of the one way streets and people just walking right out in front of us, we were so scared that we would be in an accident or run over someone.

We had no idea how you were suppose to drive in these roundabouts that had so many lanes.

They park really close on the street.

I mean really close. If the space is too small, they will just keep bumping cars until they make enough space. There was no way we were going to put our rent car on the street. Instead, we found a parking garage and paid 30€ per day. Since we were so unnerved trying to drive around we went to the first one that the GPS listed. The parking garage was almost a kilometer away from our hotel. There was one that was closer, but we didn't find it. We took our GPS with us so we could find our hotel. Once we parked, we didn't move the car until we were ready to leave.

We walked to the arc where we found the red touring bus and purchased a couple of tickets. It was only then that we started to relax.

The bus took us down the Champs-Elysees and we saw the big Louis Vuitton store.

We hopped off the bus at the trocadéro where you can get a good view of the tower.

We hopped back on the bus and rode it over to the tower itself. It was well-protected. Before I left for Germany, someone had left a mysterious package there at the tower and it had to be evacuated. Fortunately, none of that drama took place during our visit.

The view from here is simply stunning. The tower is so massive.

We went back to the hotel and had some dinner, then got on the bus again so that we could see the tower all lit up.

The arc de triomphe is lovely at night.

Medieval city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg is one of those Bavarian places that you must visit should you find yourself in Germany. It is a gorgeous medieval city right on the banks of the Tauber river. Can you believe this was our view from our room at the bed and breakfast. Pinch me!

We went online to find a place to stay and boy did we luck out on this one! We chose the Hotel Hornburg Garni.

We had a marvelous room on the 2nd floor. This picture only shows half of the room. The other half was another bank of windows and a roomy marble-tiled bathroom.

The place was so historical that our room key was an actual skeleton key!

The first thing we explored was the wall itself.

I loved the clippity-clop sound that the horse made on the cobblestones.

Some of the streets were only wide enough to walk down and they were all cobblestone.

Gorgeous, huh?

Concorde Hotel

I was greeted by my husband with a rose at the airport after my 9 1/2 hour flight to Frankfurt. Isn't that sweet?

We had a nice view from our terrace of other buildings. The terrace was available to everyone in the hotel, but few knew about it.

It was nice having the terrace just outside of our room. We liked to sit out there in the evenings and relax. I also liked sitting out there during the afternoons drinking tea and reading a book. Sometimes, I would almost pinch myself because it just didn't seem real. I thought I must be dreaming.

Our room as simple, but nice. I didn't watch much television while I was there. I tried watching The Big Bang Theory, but since it was in German, the jokes tended to be lost on me. I could only watch so much of BBC news.

The bahnhof (train station) was a mere 1/2 block away, making it soooo convenient.

I still haven't figured out how I ended up with the smallest closet . . .

My 15 minutes

Somehow, my 15 minutes of fame isn't exactly what I had in mind. Yesterday, I posted a comment on Facebook on the local news page. KIII TV news posted: AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Senators have voted to allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons into public college classrooms and buildings. Today's 21-10 vote is a major push on an issue that had stalled in the Senate and House despite overwhelming numbers of lawmakers in support.

I commented that I thought this was a dumb idea and the news station has reported both last night and this morning that I made the comment. Dang! If I knew that I was going to be quoted on television, I would have made my comment a little more profound. LOL

Ladies who lunch

The reason that I was able to go to Germany in the first place was because my husband was chosen to work on the Ticona/Germany project. aka Tiger. He was over there for 3 months and I was blessed to be able to spend a month with him. I especially wanted to be there in April since that is when we had our 30th anniversary.

There were several other project wives that were along with their husbands. From left to right are Louisa (from the UK), Grazia (originally from Brazil), Me (from Texas), Susan (from Pennsylvania) and Jan (from South Carolina). We met at the Turkish restaurant in Bad Soden for lunch. Some of us walked and some arrived by car.

We had lots of stories to tell. Some knew good "menu German". It's the amount of German one needs to know in order to read the menus at the restaurants. Even the Turkish restaurant's menu was written in German. When I first arrived, I just ordered still water since I do not care for the water with the bubbles. I soon learned that the best thing to drink with the meals was wine. I do not know why I did not know that from the get-go. I guess I'm a little slow.

Did you miss me?

Did you miss me? I have been away. I have been on a wonderful trip to Germany and would go back in a heartbeat. I was blessed to have spent the last month soaking up the beautiful sights and eating fabulous food. It's probably good that I didn't stay longer; I gained a pound a week. I made a rule for myself that I would take the stairs so that it would help me not to put on TOO much weight. Since we stayed on the 5th floor, that was lots and lots of steps.

In the next few posts, I will share with you some of the wonderfulness that I experienced. I hope you will join me!

Taking a header

All of the little goodies that I ordered lately are starting to arrive so I get to PLAY! I just finished this steampunk necklace and wrote a little story to go with it. It's fun to develop a story that fits the pieces. Here is the story that I wrote to go with this one:

One evening at the pub, his friends challenged him to a race across France. What could he say? He couldn't let his friends know that he didn't even own a bicycle. He had to borrow his Dad's old bicycle. The bicycle kind of scared him. It was one of those darn penny-farthing bicycles. He had taken so many headers on that stupid contraption. The worst spill was right in front of a group of young women that he had been trying to impress. He was utterly humiliated. Now, he had the possibility of going over the handlebars in front of everyone . . .

Wholly Devoted

I like to give my necklaces a name and have called this one, "Wholly Devoted". I've been having fun playing with all the new little trinkets that I've been picking up at estate sales and online. In case you are unaware, online shopping can be a very dangerous activity. May I add, very, very dangerous? LOL

I have a multitude of packages that I have already received and have more on their way. Every morning, I am like a puppy dog watching out of the window for my mailman to stop by.

For this necklace, I used a portion of a vintage rosary, a religious medal, and the most adorable tiny glass vial. I had gone to an estate sale and picked up a really old German Catholic book of novenas. It is from 1841. Since the book as in bad condition (obviously well-used), it didn't bother me to remove pages and even (dare I say it?) rip them apart.

I am hoping to put together more in the next few days. Wish me luck!

Christmas came early at our house. We bought a new scroll saw for Howard, my DH, and since he has time off before Christmas, it seemed silly for him to have to wait to use his new toy. He mastered it quickly and has created some stunning pieces.

We went out to the sawmill and picked up several pieces of beautiful Texas mesquite. Nave's sawmill belongs to Wendy, an awesome ~~woodworker~~ artist. I enjoyed touring her wonderful shop. She had hundreds of projects in process. I am certain that we will be a regular at her shop.

Lisa created a treasury today and am so very pleased that she included my necklace in it.

She has a shop on Etsy called That Old Blue House where she sells her handmade jewelry. She fashions her jewelry using vintage lace, crazy quilts, and ephemera. It is all so beautiful. Currently, she is taking a break while she is on the mend, recovering from her recent surgery.

3rd Annual Downtown Artwalk

ARTWALK AND MUSIC FESTIVAL

Today was Kingsville's 3rd Annual Artwalk and Music Festival. They block off the street and set up booths and music. The weather was gorgeous and lots of people turned out.

The Saturday Quilters displayed their beautiful quilts up and down Kleberg Avenue.

Booths were set up the entire section of the retail portion of the historic part of downtown. While checking them out, I ran into several people that I haven't seen in quite awhile. It was nice to catch up with them.

Nathan Nordstom, a.k.a. Sloke, of Austin was creating his graffiti art. It kind of reminded me of what I see the when I get stopped by the train. It's amazing what he can do with different cans of spray paint.

I left before the Kingsville Youth Ballet Folklorico came to perform. I would have like to have seen them, but I needed to get back home. Several bands will begin performing at 3:30 and then to top it off, Roger Creager start his performance at 9:35pm. The beer, wine and tequila tasting will begin at 4:30pm. Sorry to say, I'll be missing that as well. Rats!

Long before there was ever a Red Hat Society, the BLACK hat society ~~witches~~ ladies were getting together to have their "girl" time.

I created this assemblage in a big clock that I picked up while shopping at Warrenton last weekend. It is complete with spider webs, a clock, an icky spider, and even a little mouse if you look real close. I took it to my booth at Third Coast where I have lots of cool Halloween items.

Rustic Halloween

Witching hour

A while back, Anne offered the image of this woman on her blog. I have looked, but can't seem to find the post. Anywho, I decided that she would make the perfect witch with her black dress and long, slender fingers. I photo-shopped a witch's hat on her and repaired the image just a bit.

For this piece, I took an old clock and turned it upside-down. It makes such a wonderful shadowbox. Too bad the mice are running amuck. LOL :D

Yesterday, Brenda surprised me by including my wire basket in her ArtFire Collections list that she calls A Basket Case (hey! I'm one of those!) Be sure to stop by her shop, TheTwelfthDimension.She has the cutest miniatures for dollhouses.

Then, this morning, Paula told me that she had included my captured witch in HER Artfire Collections list. Hers is chock full of witches. She calls it There be Witches. The first one is my Nevermore framed portrait of EAP. Thank you, Poison Garden for selecting it to go in your treasury list entitled The Raven. It's one of those items that you place with all of your family portraits around Halloween just to get people talking.

The second EAP item was in a Etsy treasury curated by CslayerD that she entitled Inspired by Poe. It is my art bottle that I fondly call "Poe dirt". It is an antique bottle filled with dirt. (ant dirt from my backyard to be specific) The label says Edgar Allan Poe cemetery dirt Old Westminster Burying Ground Baltimore, Maryland.

Of course, no cemetery was actually visited in making this art bottle. Last year, I was contacted by the director of the Old Westminster Burying Ground because they wanted to be sure that no one was stealing their dirt. I promise; I am no grave robber! LOL

My sister and I got up before the sun and drove to Wimberley on Saturday for a fun day of SHOPPING at the Wimberley Market Days.

It was incredibly hot but with all the great items we were finding, we just kept on truckin'. The parking lot attendant couldn't believe how many trips we made back to the car to load up all of our goodies. As usual, I meant to take more pictures, but I get mesmerized and forget to pull the camera out of my pocket.

I found one booth that had all the things I love - old door knobs, picture frames, enamel pans, flatware, bottles. . . all at better-than-garage-sale prices. I loaded up all kinds of items that I will use in other projects.

I started playing on Photoshop today and decided to make a new header for my blog. The other one just wasn't working for me any more. The little girl is my Mom when she was a little girl and I have absolutely no idea who it is in the picture by the typewriter. He is a photo that I purchased a couple of years ago.

I am a lot faster working with Photoshop, but it still takes me a great deal of time. I guess the fact that I can do anything at all in it is an absolute miracle. LOL
